Overweight may be considered as normal. Please follow my arguments below to see why.
Still, you can reduce your bodyweight permanently if you get motivated by the grizzly consequences of being chubby. It helps to get the right advice, as I did.
Let me start briefly at the beginning - the beginning of mankind that is. Whether you believe in evolution or creation, there is that point in time where early humans found themselves in the wilderness, either by outgrowing the animal kingdom, or by being thrown out of paradise, for, of course, eating the wrong food!
Say 2 million years ago, the cave-people were these hunters and gatherers. It took them well over a million years to get smart enough to invent farming, food storage, and domestication of animals. They were dim witted. Hunting for food was tough. Having killed an elephant meant that the whole tribe was feasting and eating like mad for a few days. What they couldn’t devour went bad. Often there were long waits between these feasts. Too long for some to survive on berries and mushrooms, if they found any. Some tribes dyed out completely, like the Neanderthals. Others had smarter genes. Their body learned how to bridge feast and famine. They put on fat when they could, so they had built in reserves for bad times.
That’s why putting on fat is normal. Our body developed over millions of years to ensure its own survival. The method worked, and the human race is still around.
Now for a few thousand years we have been more organised with our food production. But that’s like the blink of an eye in these millions of years of human development. And for less than a hundred years we have very efficient electric mills, refined processing, refrigeration, and an abundance of everything our stomach desires.
Our genes have not even gotten a whiff of that recent change. They make our body do what worked for millions of years, putting on fat whenever it can. So that is normal. Our body still waits for the famine. But what is the chance for that in the developed part of our world? We may still live in weird times, but famine is not a major risks factor any longer.
So there are these extra body reserves. Since so many of us have them, that also makes them normal. Because normal means by definition the average, the common state of things. Being overweight may not be ideal, but it is becoming quite acceptable nowadays. We are imperfect in so many ways. A measure of obesity is just another one of these human imperfections.
